Immersive Motion Responsive Room

Futures Gallery: Future of Personal Data is an interactive installation created to spark internal conversations at Capital One around the evolving nature of personal data—particularly in the wake of the company’s major data breach. Developed by the Physical Experience Design (PXD) studio and launched at the San Francisco office before traveling to others, the piece invites participants to explore the trade-offs between privacy, security, and convenience through a series of immersive, sensorial interactions.

I led technical development across the project—from early concept refinement to final implementation. My contributions spanned visual direction, physical computing, and fabrication, including designing a custom joystick interface and integrating sensors and projection systems into a cohesive, spatial narrative.

Structure

1. The Apertures

The entry wall features three embedded lenses—acrylic spheres mounted over screens—playing looping animations that raise questions about personal data and digital life. The lenses are positioned low, encouraging a peeking gesture that amplifies the sense of intimacy and distortion. I also added a feature that records the depth camera’s point cloud data, ensuring all visual content remains spatially coherent.

2. The Core Experience

In the main space, guests interact via a triangular joystick interface while being tracked by a Kinect sensor. Each corner of the triangle represents one of three values—Privacy, Security, or Convenience—and each choice activates a unique combination of visuals, ambient projections, and directional audio:

  • Privacy evokes nature and calm.

  • Security incorporates sharp, mechanical sounds and visuals.

  • Convenience channels the rhythm and movement of modern travel.

These modes are designed to feel immediate and emotionally distinct—making abstract trade-offs tangible and embodied.

3. Collective Visualization

Upon exiting, guests encounter a real-time visualization of all previous responses, creating a living archive of how personal values shift across the organization. The final moment connects individual choice to collective awareness.

By turning personal data into a shared, physical dialogue, Futures Gallery: Future of Personal Data creates space for reflection, accountability, and imaginative thinking—anchored in a tactile, visually rich experience.
